If you keep important files on a flash drive and you don’t keep a backup of those files and that flash drive becomes corrupt and doesn’t mount on your Mac desktop, here’s what you need to do to recover those lost files:

After you make your purchase, you’ll be sent an email with instructions for how to activate the memory recovery software. You’ll also receive an email receipt with your license code that you’ll need to activate the software.
Once you’ve activated the software, follow these instructions:
- Makes sure your USB drive is connected to your machine.
- In Step 1: Select the type(s) of files you would like to recover – Select “All devices – All devices and file types” (last option in the list).
- In Step 2: Available disks and volumes – Select “USB Removable Disk USB Flash Disk.”
- In Step 3: Confirm the accuracy of the destination location, which is where your files will be saved. Be sure that the destination has enough space to store the recovered files. If you do not include anything in this option, the default will be “/Users/[machine name]/Recovered”
- In the next screen, the software will scan your USB drive. This may take some time depending on how many files are stored on your USB devise.
- Once the scanning is complete, open your Finder window and search for the destination you indicated for your files to be stored. If you did not specify a location, your files will be found in the Recovered file; in which case you’d type “recovered” in the Search field. Find your files and drag them onto your Desktop.
You’ll need to rename and re-organize your files as they will each have a generic name, “File###.” After you’ve organized your files, make a backup of them in Dropbox, Google Drive, and/or on another external hard drive.
Finally, reformat your USB drive by doing the following:
- Go to Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities
- On the left side, select the sub option listed below the name of your USB drive.
- Select “Erase” in the menu bar.
- Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) if you want the drive to be password protected (preferred).
- Name your drive
- Click “Erase” at the bottom. Final options and password selection will be prompted on the next screen.
Once the drive is reformatted, you can use it again.
